How do Air Source Heat Pumps work?

The government will pay you a fee depending on how much energy you can convert from being generated by higher carbon methods like, oil fired boilers, electric storage heaters, solid fuel boilers or gas boilers, to air source heat pumps which are low in carbon emissions. This fee is called the Renewable Heat Incentive or RHI for short.

The RHI that the government will pay depends on your current carbon footprint and we have calculated that if you currently have a high carbon footprint, the fee paid by the government over the next seven years can be greater than the cost of equivalent loan to buy and install an air source heat pump, effectively making it free for qualifying households.

What are the main benefits of an air source heat pump?

Houses that have installed an air source heat pump will have lower fuel bills and lower carbon emissions depending on which fuel has been replaced. Once installed there is no requirement for fuel deliveries, and there is minimal on-going maintenance required, you will also have a system that maintains reliability over a 20-year plus life expectancy.

Do I qualify?

Everyone qualifies, Fully funded or Part funded. How do Air Source Heat Pumps work?

The ideal energy saving unit works by using vapor compression refrigeration, which involves a compressor and a condenser to absorb heat from outside air and releases it through your existing radiators, under floor heating, or warm air convectors and even the hot water in your home.  It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally.

All matter has something called ambient energy, which exists even below "freezing" temperatures or below 0°C.  Indeed, there is also heat 'Absolute Zero', or −273.15° however there is no where on the planet that gets that cold, but it provides an example that heat energy exists and can be extracted and used to heat your home by extracting the heat from the ground.

If you feel the back of a refrigerator you will notice there is a radiant heat, and yet your freezer is still cold.  This is an example of a heat pump where  although a freezer maintains a temperature of -18 C, it still has enough heat energy inside to warm the element behind the fridge.  The amount of energy that a refrigerator uses is very small in comparison to the amount of energy that can be extracted from the environment. 

Air Source Heat Pumps are easier to install that ground source heat pumps, and are also designed to produce far more energy than the electrical grid, allowing you to take advantage of lower fuel costs and an endless source of warmth and comfort in your home.  An efficient energy source heat pump only uses 1 unit of electrical energy and  can produce 4 or 5 units of heat energy.
